NEW PASSAT DEBUTS VW’S SEVEN-SPEED WET CLUTCH DCT

Volkswagen’s new-generation Passat – the eighth edition of the family-sized model in its 41-year history – incorporates the latest in the Volkswagen group’s transmission technology, including for the first time a high-torque wet clutch DCT with seven speeds. The top model reviewed here, the 240 hp GT, also comes with standard 4-motion four-wheel drive and a suite of driver-assist features, such as driver alert and automatic post-collision braking, aimed at safety and convenience.
The 2.0 liter diesel engines, which form the core of the model range in Europe, now include significantly more powerful bi-turbo derivatives ranging as high as 240 hp. The two most powerful diesel models feature SCR exhaust emissions reduction technology, requiring periodic top-ups of the AdBlue tank through a filler located next to the regular diesel filler. The 240 hp engine has a special type of torsional damper to allow it to run more smoothly at very low rpm; the device consists of an annular spring encircling the conventional dual mass flywheel. Overall, the powertrains are some 40 kg lighter than those on the outgoing generation of Passat, and up to 35 kg has been saved on the body and trim of the vehicle due to VW’s MQB modular transverse matrix construction system.
The Passat remains a relatively large vehicle by European standards, measuring close to the 4.9 meters in length of a station wagon. Substantial CO2 reductions have been achieved with the new generation. 41 percent of the savings are attributable to driveline improvements, 24 percent to weight reduction, 18 percent to aerodynamics and 15 percent to reductions in rolling resistance. All models are available with dual clutch automatic transmissions. The lowest powered editions can be ordered with the seven-speed dry clutch DCT, while the core of the range comes with the familiar six-speed wet clutch unit. Only the top specification models are supplied with the new wet clutch seven speed, a design that shares some common features with Audi’s new seven speed for longitudinally mounted engines.
While the weakness of the “small” dry clutch seven-speed DCT has always been in initial launch and parking-speed maneuvering, first impressions of the top 240 hp GT under these conditions are much more favorable. Low-speed behavior is smooth and refined, and equal in driveability to a planetary automatic. Only the relatively larger step from second to third is noticeable as a shift, and then only under certain conditions. Immediately evident is the immense 500 Nm torque of the bi-turbo diesel engine; even at very low rpm, the combination of the new torsional damper and the sensible transmission mapping allows wide throttle openings and powerful acceleration.
Even in the very tall seventh gear there is good torque for acceleration at low speeds, while in its sport setting the transmission is markedly more sensitive and responsive, though somewhat to the detriment of its overall feeling of relaxation.
A Driver Profile selection control, sited alongside the gear shifter, gives a choice of settings that includes Eco to maximize fuel efficiency. This allows the engine to coast when the vehicle is slowing down or even cruising on level ground with the throttle pedal released. It operates by opening both clutches simultaneously, leaving the engine at idle and inaudible above the already minimal tire and road noise. Any brake, throttle or steering input will instantly restart the engine.
Eco also enables an enhanced 2.0 version of the group’s stop-start system, cutting the engine from around 7 km/h as the driver slows for a red light. On manual models it is triggered by the driver selecting neutral, while DSG automatics look for a combination of parameters that suggest the driver is intending to stop. The system is able to restart the engine very quickly for the once-notorious “change of mind” situation, such as when approaching a roundabout (traffic circle) or when the red light turns green before the vehicle has stopped. This feature saves up to 1.7 g of CO2 per km in the standard European test cycle, says VW. Mild hybrid versions of VW models already feature engine shut-off when coasting at speed, which is set to come to conventional models in the near future.
Already available on sister-brand Audi’s larger A6 sedan is an Ultra derivative with a still greater concentration of CO2-saving technologies. The new wet dual clutch seven-speed transmission on this model features tandem (rather than concentrically nested) clutches and an on-demand dry-sump lubrication system which drip-feeds the oil from the top via a two-stage electric oil pump. The lubricant is able to run at up to 150°C, according to engineers involved in the project.

Называют, только очень редко.
Предыдущий Пассат, как правило, называют 3С. До него были 3B и 3BG.
Новый Пассат так и называют "Новый Пассат".
Но вообще такая полуофициальная классификация существует - В5, В6, В7...
